Staff spotlight: Paul Van Suylen, Partner – Distribution

Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

My career spans more than 30 years across financial advisory and wealth management, which makes me feel a little old. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a range of investors and advisers, building relationships that have lasted throughout my career. Those connections and experiences have been invaluable in my role at Pallas Capital, particularly when it comes to working with high-net-worth investors and helping them navigate investment opportunities with confidence.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and I continue to build my resilience as a long-suffering Essendon supporter.

How did you come to be part of the Pallas Capital team?

I was already working in the private credit sector before joining Pallas Capital, so I had a front-row seat to the company’s growth and the reputation it was building in the market. After meeting Mark Spring and Craig Bannister and hearing their vision for the business, I knew it was a team I wanted to be part of. There was a clear sense of ambition, but also a strong focus on relationships, which really resonated with me and my career aspirations.

What does a typical workday look like for you at Pallas Capital?

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that no two days are ever the same. A typical day might involve meeting with prospective investors, catching up with existing clients to discuss opportunities and market developments, and working closely with the wider Pallas Capital team to ensure we’re delivering the best possible outcomes.

At its core, my role is about relationships. Whether it’s helping a new investor understand private credit or maintaining long-standing client connections, that’s what I enjoy most.

What has been your highlight at Pallas Capital so far?

Since joining in 2022, a standout has been the growth of the business. The team has more than doubled in size during that time, but one of the best things, is that we’ve retained a collaborative culture with a supportive and approachable leadership team. I believe that’s a big part of what underpins the success of the business. There’s a genuine willingness across the team to share knowledge, support one another and work towards a shared goal. As we’ve grown, maintaining those values and culture has been important, and it’s exciting to be part of that journey.

What are some of your proudest achievements or milestones during your time at Pallas Capital?

I’m proud of my investor base growth over the past three years, but what I value most, is when an existing client refers someone new to me. Those referrals reflect the trust our clients place in Pallas Capital and reinforce the importance of long-term relationships.

Looking ahead, what are your professional goals and aspirations within Pallas Capital? How do you see yourself contributing to the company’s future success?

I’m excited to continue building on the momentum of the past few years by expanding my investor base and introducing more prospective clients to Pallas Capital. A big part of that is continuing to deepen existing relationships and helping more investors understand the opportunities available through private credit.

We’ve built a strong platform for growth, and I’m looking forward to playing a part in the next chapter of the business.
